A number of years ago I was deeply touched by a
poem called “Things You Didn’t Do” by a young lady who wanted to
remain anonymous. Her poem speaks about a special young man in her
life, possibly a fiancé or husband.
Let me paraphrase some of what I can recall: “Do you remember the
time I borrowed your brand new car and wrecked it? I thought you’d
kill me, but you didn’t.” And “Do you remember the time I was
flirting with other guys to make you jealous? I thought you would
leave me, but you didn’t.”
The poem continues this way about things this young lady did and the
response she thought she would get from this young man, but didn’t.
I never have forgotten the last part of the poem: “Yes, there were
many things you didn’t do. But you put up with me; you loved me and
you protected me. There were lots of things I wanted to make up to
you when you returned from Viet Nam. But you didn’t.”
In my more than twenty years of serving families as a Minister,
Pastor and Chaplain I’ve been able to help many people with many
issues. But what people have wished for the most is the one thing I
have never been able to do – and that is to turn the clock back to
give people a chance to do things differently. Time simply cannot be
turned back. It only moves forward.
That’s why I developed this list of things you shouldn’t do if there
are special people in your life that you love and who love you.
Follow these and your regrets will be minimized as the clock of your
life rapidly moves on.
